Gen Z Hasn’t Lost Its Loyalty to Brands. Brands Have Lost Their Ability to Understand Gen Z

For years, marketers have described Gen Z as a generation with little or no brand loyalty.

They are often portrayed as impatient consumers who constantly move toward the next new product, search for the lowest price, and make decisions based primarily on TikTok trends, creators, and social media influence.

But perhaps the problem isn’t the generation.

Perhaps many brands are still speaking to an audience that has changed, using the same messages, assumptions, and audience definitions they relied on yesterday.

New research from Rival Technologies presents a more complex and much more interesting picture. The study, conducted in July and August 2026, surveyed 903 Gen Z consumers in the United States and Canada to explore what actually drives brand loyalty among young consumers.

According to the findings, 64% of respondents said they always or usually stay with a brand they like, even when a cheaper or newer alternative is available.

Brand loyalty has not disappeared.

It simply can no longer be taken for granted.

What Makes Gen Z Loyal to a Brand?

One of the most important findings in the research concerns the feeling of being understood.

Only 11% of respondents said that brands understand them really well. Within this relatively small group, 45% said they are always loyal to brands. Among respondents who felt that brands did not understand them, only 5% reported the same level of loyalty.

The researchers rightly point out that these figures are based on a smaller subgroup and show an association rather than proof of causation. Still, the direction is meaningful.

People are more likely to build loyalty toward brands when they feel seen, understood, and addressed within the context of their real lives.

This feeling is not created simply by using younger language, joining the latest social platform, or adopting a popular visual trend. It is created when a brand understands what matters to its audience, which problems people are trying to solve, and what motivates them to choose one product or service over another.

Relevance is not about appearing current.

It is about demonstrating genuine understanding.

Gen Z Is Not a Single Target Audience

One of the most common mistakes in brand strategy is treating an entire generation as a single audience segment.

Definitions such as “Gen Z,” “young consumers,” “executives,” or “technology companies” may provide a useful starting point, but they are not precise enough to guide an effective brand and marketing strategy.

The Rival Technologies research identified meaningful differences between age groups within Gen Z. Younger respondents, aged 18 to 20, were more influenced by discovery and recommendations from other people. Among those aged 25 to 29, reliability and customer service became increasingly important.

These differences may reflect life stage as much as age. An 18 year old living at home has different priorities, responsibilities, and purchasing behaviours from a 28 year old building a career, managing a household, or planning a future with a partner.

The research also found differences between countries. American respondents were more likely than Canadian respondents to say that brands understand them well, while Canadian consumers appeared more skeptical.

The same generation can therefore respond differently according to age, location, circumstances, culture, and expectations.

A brand targeting Gen Z cannot rely on one youthful design or one universal message. It needs to understand the specific groups within the broader audience and identify what each group needs to hear.

Price, Quality, and Value Still Matter More Than Trends

Another important finding challenges a widely repeated marketing assumption.

When participants were asked what keeps them coming back to a brand, 82% selected price and value, while 80% chose product quality.

Other factors ranked lower. Rewards and perks were selected by 41% of respondents, alignment with personal values by 36%, customer service by 33%, recommendations from friends or family by 28%, and influencer recommendations by just 9%.

These findings do not mean that values, purpose, communities, or influencer marketing are irrelevant. They suggest that these elements work best when the foundation is already strong.

Values can deepen an existing relationship, but they cannot rescue a poor product. A compelling brand story cannot replace disappointing service. A creative campaign cannot compensate for an offer that fails to provide genuine value.

Before asking customers to identify with its purpose, a brand must first prove that it can deliver on its promise.

The product needs to work. The experience needs to meet expectations. The value needs to be clear.

Only then can the brand story strengthen the relationship.

What Is the Connection Between Gen Z Loyalty and Agile Branding?

Agile Branding is built around the ability to maintain a clear and stable brand core while adapting the way the brand communicates, behaves, and presents itself to different audiences and changing market conditions.

This does not mean changing the brand’s identity every time a new trend appears.

It does not mean reacting impulsively to every shift in consumer behaviour.

It means listening, learning, and refining.

A brand’s core includes its values, point of view, promise, and the genuine value it creates. The expression of that core can evolve according to the audience, market, life stage, channel, and context.

A brand can speak to younger Gen Z consumers through one message and to older members of the same generation through another. It can emphasise discovery and participation for one audience while leading with reliability and service for another.

It can use one point of entry in the American market and a more credibility focused approach in the Canadian market without losing its identity.

Adapting the message does not automatically make a brand inconsistent.

When the core remains clear, adaptation makes the brand more relevant.

Dynamic Branding Begins With Listening

Audience research should not be treated as a task completed once at the beginning of a branding process.

Audiences change. Priorities evolve. Economic, technological, cultural, and social conditions influence the way people evaluate brands and make decisions.

What mattered to customers two years ago may not be what motivates them today. Even within the same target audience, age, financial circumstances, experience, and life stage can significantly change expectations.

Brands therefore need an ongoing system of listening.

Useful insights can come from sales conversations, recurring customer service questions, website behaviour, social media responses, surveys, customer interviews, search patterns, and the reasons people choose or reject an offer.

Listening does not require rebuilding the entire brand every few months. It helps identify when a gap has formed between the way a company sees itself and the way its customers experience it.

Sometimes the message needs to be refined. Sometimes the value proposition is no longer clear enough. Sometimes a website fails to help different audiences find the information that is most relevant to them. In other cases, the company has evolved while the brand has remained attached to an earlier version of the business.

The important question is not whether the brand looks current.

The question is whether it still helps the right people understand why it matters to them.

How Can Brands Build Loyalty With Gen Z?

The first step is to strengthen the fundamentals. The product, service, value, and customer experience must support the promise made by the brand. Without this foundation, even excellent branding cannot create sustainable loyalty.

The second step is to stop treating Gen Z as one audience. Brands need to identify meaningful subgroups, understand their different life stages, and discover what motivates each group to choose, stay, or leave.

The third step is to adapt the expression of the brand without abandoning its core. Messages, examples, content priorities, and communication channels can change according to the audience. The central promise and identity should remain recognisable.

The fourth step is to keep listening after the branding process has been completed. A brand is not a static system that can be created once and preserved unchanged. It needs to learn from reality and adapt when the company, audience, or market evolves.

Is Gen Z Actually Loyal to Brands?

Based on the Rival Technologies research, Gen Z consumers can be loyal to brands. Most participants said they usually remain with brands they like, even when newer or cheaper options are available.

However, their loyalty depends on more than familiarity. Gen Z consumers appear to prioritise clear value, product quality, reliability, and the feeling that a brand understands their needs.

Brand loyalty is therefore not created solely through repeated exposure, social media activity, or participation in cultural trends. It develops when there is a clear connection between the brand promise, the customer experience, and the audience’s real priorities.

Perhaps the Problem Isn’t Loyalty. Perhaps It’s Relevance.

It is easy to blame the audience.

Brands can say that customers have shorter attention spans, care only about price, follow trends, or are less loyal than previous generations.

It is harder to stop and ask more challenging questions.

Do we still understand the people we want to reach?

Are we speaking about what interests our company, or what matters to our customers?

Are we using the same message for groups with very different needs?

Has our audience evolved while our brand remained in the same place?

Gen Z is not teaching us that brand loyalty is dead. It is teaching us that loyalty is no longer granted simply because a brand is established, familiar, or consistent.

Loyalty must be earned.

It begins with genuine value and grows when customers feel that the brand understands them.

This is the connection between brand loyalty and Agile Branding. A brand should not change simply to chase its audience. It should continue listening, learning, and adapting so it can remain meaningful to the people it exists to serve.

A strong brand knows who it is.

An agile brand also knows when and how to evolve.
