3 rules for getting focus right in branding
There’s something very tempting about focus.
Deciding what to do. And more importantly, what not to do.
Over the past few years, I’ve been seeing it more and more
leaders trying to sharpen, narrow, and refine.
And recently, with all the talk around OpenAI and the Sora story,
the word “focus” is back in the spotlight.
Whether it’s accurate or not, that’s not the point.
What is interesting
is how quickly we all jump to the same conclusion:
we need focus.
But after nearly 30 years in this field,
I can say something different.
Brands don’t fail because they lack focus.
They fail because their focus is in the wrong place.
Many companies translate focus into uniformity.
One message
One tone
One approach
For everyone.
It looks right.
It feels consistent.
But in reality, it simply doesn’t work.
Because reality isn’t uniform.
And neither is your audience.
Real focus in branding
is not found in the message.
It’s found in identity.
In what stays stable
even when everything around it changes.
To make this work in practice,
I keep coming back to three simple rules.
Rule one
Focus on identity, not on the message.
Messages change depending on context.
That’s natural.
But identity shouldn’t change with every new campaign.
When a brand is built around a single message,
it breaks when reality shifts.
When identity is clear,
you can move without losing yourself.
Rule two
One brand should not speak the same way to everyone.
Same brand.
Different language for each audience.
Not because it’s confused,
but because it understands.
The ability to stay who you are,
while sounding different that’s the core.
Rule three
Real focus also means choosing what not to do.
Not every trend
Not every platform
Not every opportunity
What you say no to
is what sharpens your direction.
I see companies trying to “be focused”
and in doing so, they limit themselves.
And on the other side,
companies that understand the difference
and manage to stay precise, even as they move.
The trunk stays stable.
The branches evolve.
