What Does It Take to Stay Relevant in the Age of AI?

AI is changing almost every part of the business world. It is changing how companies work, how teams create, how customers search for information, how decisions are made and how quickly new ideas can move from concept to reality.

But the more I follow what is happening, the more I believe that the most important question is not simply how companies should use AI.

The bigger question is what companies need to become in order to stay relevant in a world where change is happening faster than ever.

A recent McKinsey article about how CEOs are leading through the AI shift made me think about this again. What interested me was that the conversation was not really only about technology. The CEOs featured in the article were looking at much broader questions: how people will work, how roles may change, where human value will become more important and how organizations can create enough structure to move in one direction while still allowing new ideas to emerge.

That distinction matters.

AI may be accelerating the change, but the challenge facing companies today is much bigger than AI itself.

When change becomes the environment

For many years, businesses treated change as an event.

A new competitor entered the market. A company expanded internationally. Customer behaviour shifted. A new technology arrived. An organization went through a rebranding process or launched a new product.

Something changed, and the company responded.

Today that rhythm is very different.

Change is becoming continuous. Technology is developing faster. New markets can open quickly. Customer expectations shift. New generations enter the workforce and bring different behaviours with them. Products evolve, communication channels change and companies often find themselves speaking to audiences that were not even part of the original brand strategy.

For companies in Israel, as in other fast moving business environments around the world, this reality is especially familiar. Businesses often need to move between local and international markets, adapt to new technologies and communicate with different audiences while continuing to build a recognizable company and brand.

The question, therefore, is no longer how to respond to the next change.

It is how to build an organization and a brand that are capable of living with change.

Staying relevant does not mean changing everything

When the world is moving quickly, the natural reaction can be to move quickly with it.

New technology? Adopt it.

New visual trend? Follow it.

New audience? Change the message.

New communication platform? Create a new presence.

But constant movement is not the same as relevance.

In fact, I believe the faster the world changes, the more important it becomes to know what should remain clear and stable.

After 30 years working in branding and brand strategy, I see this distinction becoming increasingly important.

A strong brand needs to know what defines it. What it stands for. What value it creates. What people should recognize when they encounter it. What makes it different from the alternatives around it.

Those elements create continuity.

But continuity does not mean that every visual expression, message, campaign, website page or piece of communication needs to remain the same.

A brand does not need a new identity every year. It needs new ways to express the same identity.

That is a very different way of thinking about consistency.

Stability and flexibility can work together

Traditional branding placed enormous value on consistency, and for good reason. Recognition matters. Repetition matters. A company cannot create a strong identity if everything changes all the time.

But consistency can become a problem when it is interpreted as rigidity.

Companies today may have several products, several audiences and several markets. A message that works for one audience may not work for another. A visual language that feels appropriate in one context may need a different level of expression in another.

The challenge is not choosing between consistency and flexibility.

It is understanding where each belongs.

The brand core can remain recognizable while the expression changes according to the audience, context and need.

The same principle applies beyond branding. An organization can have a clear direction while allowing teams to experiment. Leadership can define priorities while remaining open to signals coming from employees and customers. A company can know what it stands for without pretending it already knows exactly what the next five years will look like.

In a rapidly changing world, stability may increasingly come through the ability to adapt rather than through the ability to remain unchanged.

Listening is becoming part of brand strategy

There is another important shift taking place.

Brand strategy was traditionally something companies developed at specific moments. A new company would define its positioning. An established business might go through a rebranding process. Research would be conducted, decisions would be made, a brand identity would be created and the company would move forward.

That process still has value. A brand needs a clear foundation.

But today, listening cannot stop when the branding process ends.

Sales teams hear what customers are asking for. Marketing teams see which messages create interest. Customer service teams identify recurring questions. Product teams see new needs emerging. Websites show how people search, navigate and behave. Markets and competitors continuously send new signals.

AI adds another layer to this because it allows companies to process and understand much more information, much faster.

But data alone does not tell a company what to do.

It needs interpretation.

The important question is not simply what changed.

It is whether that change matters enough to require a response.

There is a big difference between being reactive and being adaptive.

A reactive brand follows every movement around it.

An adaptive brand listens, understands what is relevant and decides consciously where change is needed.

AI makes human judgment more important

There is an interesting paradox at the heart of the AI revolution.

As machines become capable of generating more content, analysing more information and producing more options, the ability to decide between those options becomes increasingly valuable.

AI can generate 100 ideas.

Which one is right for the brand?

AI can produce different messages for different audiences.

Which message reflects what the company actually believes?

AI can analyse customer behaviour.

Which signals matter strategically?

AI can accelerate the process.

But where should the company actually go?

These are not simply technological questions.

They require experience, understanding, perspective and judgment.

For brand strategy in particular, this matters enormously. A brand is not simply a collection of visual assets and messages that can be generated faster. It represents decisions about who the company is, what it wants to mean to people and how it wants to build relationships over time.

AI can support that work.

It cannot replace the need to make those decisions.

Branding for a world that keeps moving

This changing reality is one of the reasons I have been developing my thinking around Agile Branding.

The idea begins with a relatively simple question: how can we build brands that remain clear while being able to adapt as the company, its audiences and the world around it change?

That means thinking differently about what a brand system needs to do.

The core needs to be strong enough to create recognition and direction.

At the same time, the brand needs enough flexibility to communicate differently when the audience, situation or market requires it.

And it needs to keep listening.

Not because everything should constantly change, but because a brand cannot remain relevant if it stops paying attention to the reality around it.

This approach is relevant both to new brands and to established companies going through growth or transformation.

A new company can build flexibility into its brand from the beginning.

An established company can identify what should remain and what needs to evolve.

In both cases, the goal is the same: to create a brand that can support the business not only as it exists today, but as it continues to develop.

The real question of the AI age

Nobody knows exactly where AI will take us.

The tools we use today will change. New capabilities will appear. Some roles will evolve. New business models will emerge and customer expectations will continue to shift.

Trying to predict every change is impossible.

But companies can prepare differently.

They can become clearer about what defines them. They can build stronger ways of listening to their customers and markets. They can create brand systems with enough flexibility to respond to different audiences and opportunities. And they can become more deliberate about the areas in which human judgment, creativity and relationships create the greatest value.

Perhaps that is one of the most important changes the AI era is asking from us.

Not simply to adopt more technology.

To become better at knowing what should stay, what should change and when.

So instead of asking only how AI will change our companies and brands, perhaps we should be asking:

What do we need to become in order to stay relevant in the age of AI?
